What are figs? Are figs vegetarian?
We have written so far in this blog about several products that we would not have thought could be non-vegan or non-vegetarian. However, don’t worry, you don’t have to give up another food you like. Figs are vegetarian. But when it comes to the question “are figs vegans“, things change a bit. Because figs may not be vegan. This is a question that everyone had to answer for themselves.
Are figs vegan?
Next time you go shopping in a supermarket, compare the figs to dried fruits. You will notice that most dried figs are not labeled as vegan compared to other dried fruits. What is the reason for this? Fig is a fruit. It must be vegan, right? This is the reason:
Figs are fruits, but they are not always vegan. In fact, there are many types of figs that need to be pollinated by wasps, and they usually die in the process.
Why are figs not vegan?
Because the fruit’s flowers are turned inward and thus not easily accessible, pollination is more difficult than with many other fruits.
The edible fig must be pollinated by the fig wasps, which reproduce through the buck fig. The buck fig has male and female flowers. The male flowers serve as a home for the wasps to lay their eggs, ensuring the survival of the fig wasps.
The edible fig has only female flowers and is thus unsuitable for fig wasp reproduction. However, because wasps cannot tell the difference between the buck and the edible fig, pregnant fig wasps will also fly into the edible fig to lay their eggs.
However, this method of egg laying is fatal for the fig wasp because it loses its wings, legs, and antennae as it crawls in. As a result, the wasp has no way of getting out of the fruit, which kills it.
At the same time, the wasp fertilizes the flower, which eventually grows into a fig.
The bottom line is that almost every fig you eat contains a wasp.

Are there vegan figs?
Yes, there are many different vegan fig varieties. If oyu want to have a fig plant for vegan figs at home or on the balcony, you have to choose self-pollinating fig trees.
Most U.S.-grown figs are self-pollinating and can develop without the mutualism of pollinator wasps.
Which fig trees are self- pollinating?
“Common” figs, including ‘Brown Turkey”, ‘Celeste’, Brunswick’ and ‘Mission’ do not need pollination.

Figs are not only delicious, but they are also extremely healthy. The sweet fruits contain a variety of vitamins and minerals, including magnesium and potassium. Even in terms of calories, figs don’t need to hide, as they have hardly more than apples – but this only applies to fresh fruit, as dried figs aren’t good for your waistline. Learn about the health benefits of figs and what’s in the sweet fruit.
Health benefits of figs
Fresh figs are real superfood and were already popular in ancient times. One fruit (60 g) contains just under 40 kcal. In addition, figs provide potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, as well as a good portion of vitamins, digestive enzymes and satiating fiber.
Their various ingredients make fresh figs a valuable food with various positive effects on health. Thus, figs are considered healthy for:
Heart: thanks to their high potassium and magnesium content
Nerves: especially B vitamins are important for the nervous system

Which fig is the sweetest?
The black mission fig, which has its origins in Spain via the West Indies and Mexico, is the most often planted variety in California. Figs are a very adaptable fruit that may be eaten fresh, dried, or preserved and utilized in both sweet and savory cuisines. The sweetest fig is black mission figs, which hasrose-red meat and deep blue-purple skin. According to Black Mission Figs Nutrition, these substantial figs are prized for their strong aroma, decadent honey flavor, and nutrition, which are moderately rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals and serve as a good source of iron and calcium.
Types of figs. Figs that grow in the USA
98% of the fresh figs consumed in the US are grown in California, which focuses on growing the Mission, Brown Turkey, Kadota, Sierra, and Tiger kinds. However, I have also mentioned a few more that I have seen at markets and in shops.
Depending on the variety, figs can have a wide range of flavors, including berry, honey, caramel, molasses, and plain sugar. Some flavors are more subdued than others.
Which figs are the best?
If you prefer savory to sweet, Brown Turkey figs may be a good choice. They are less sweet and perfect for salads.
If you want to prepare jams or preserves, Kadota would be my recommendation
If you are looking for sweet figs, Black Mission must be your choice. They have a dark, purple-black outer skin and a rich flavor.
Calimyrna, on the other hand, has more of a nutty, buttery flavor.
Adriatic fig has a pale-green, sometimes striped candy-like exterior. They are fresh and sweet. They originally come from Italy and aren’t often in grocery stores
Are figs bad for dogs? What is Fig Poisoning?
According to Wag, fig plants can be toxic to dogs. The leaves of the fig contain a sap that can be very irritating to dogs. Fig poisoning in dogs can happen to dogs that eat any part of this plant.
You should avoid having any fig plants in your house if you have dogs or other small animals. Many cats and dogs, especially puppies, like to explore and chew on unfamiliar items. This can lead to a great deal of sickness and a hospital stay.
Fig poisoning in dogs is a result of dogs ingesting the fig, or ficus, plant. The fig plant contains a toxic, sap-like substance known as ficin, which is toxic when consumed or when it comes into contact with the skin, eyes, or mouth of dogs.
Various information can be found on the Internet. Many sites claim that dogs can eat figs without any problems. Your dog can live without figs. So, why would you risk that?
How to tell if a fig is ripe
Depending on the variety, figs are ripe as soon as the fruit yields slightly to gentle finger pressure and the skin show fine cracks. Freshly picked, they taste honey-sweet to fruity-nutty.
It is less ripe and probably was picked too soon if the skin and stem are extremely firm and shiny. However, these might be ideal for you if you won’t be using the figs for a few days because they will survive longer at home.
Finally, avoid overripe fruits and avoid those with bruises if they have a faintly “sour” fragrance.
If you’re plucking fresh figs off a tree, look for ones that have begun to ‘droop’ on the tree and soften.
Can you freeze figs?
You can freeze figs. However, once frozen, figs lose their plump quality and become mushy, similar to many other fruits. This occurs as a result of the water in figs expanding into ice crystals during the freezing process, which weakens the cell walls.
