Is alkaline diet good or bad for you?

A diet that is low in foods that produce acid but high in alkaline minerals is known as an alkaline diet. It is usually done temporarily, however, some people do it as a cure, for a period of 1 to 2 weeks.

Many nutritionists recommend about 75 percent alkaline foods and 25 percent acid-forming foods as a guideline for one’s diet. It is said that it helps purification and soothes the organism because it is light and full of important nutrients. On the other hand, the alkaline-surplus diet is a long-term nutritional strategy. Is alkaline diet good for you?

According to “The German Nutrition Society” (DGE, 2019), it is unclear whether an alkaline diet can prevent certain diseases. It is also not scientifically proven that acid-forming foods actually disrupt the acid-base balance.

In addition, the DGE points out that healthy people who eat a balanced diet do not have to worry about acidosis due to the diet since the body’s own buffer systems can sufficiently regulate the acid-base balance. Only in people with certain diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, is hyperacidity of the blood possible.

However, a balanced diet can assist the body’s buffer systems and lessen the acid load on the kidneys by consuming enough fruits and vegetables and a modest amount of protein.
But the diet should still include grains and dairy items on a regular basis.
After all, a healthy diet has other advantages as well!
