Is Liam Hemsworth vegan?
Liam Hemsworth is a proud vegan. He does not eat meat, dairy, or eggs. But he had to painfully realize that it’s not that easy. Liam Hemsworth has been vegan since 2015. His colleague Woody Harrelson, with whom he shot “The Hunger Games”, has avoided animal products for decades. Liam could no longer reconcile eating animals with his conscience. He followed Harrelson’s example and became an avid vegan. The animal protection organization PETA even voted him the “Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity” in 2016.
“most painful week of my life”
All went well for three years, but 2019 was a rude awakening for Liam Hemsworth at just 29 years old. “It was one of the most painful weeks of my life,” he explained to Men’s Health. Liam had developed a kidney stone due to poor nutrition. He had to interrupt the promotional tour for his film “Isn’t It Romantic” and instead went to the operating table.
He had to change his vegan diet
For the first two years, Liam Hemsworth felt fantastic on the vegan diet. His stamina was high and his body strong. However, after a kidney stone operation, he was forced to reorganize his food intake. “I was vegan for almost four years, and then in February 2019, I felt lethargic. I had a kidney stone. It was one of the most painful weeks of my life. I was on a press tour for ‘Isn’t It Romantic’. But I Had to go to the hospital and have surgery,” Liam told Men’s Health.
The actor said that “it’s all good now,” but that he had to lower his vegetable intake.
“Once you get one kidney stone, you have a 50 percent chance of getting another one if you continue eating the way you were eating,” he explained. “Well, my particular kidney stone was a calcium oxalate kidney stone. It forms from having too much oxalate in your diet. Oxalates are really high in a lot of vegetables, specifically spinach, almonds, beetroot, and potatoes. Every morning, I was having five handfuls of spinach and then almond milk, almond butter, and also some vegan protein in a smoothie. And that was what I considered super healthy. So I had to completely rethink what I was putting in my body.”
