What is Chao Cheese?
Tofu is a food that has been consumed for thousands of years in various parts of the world, especially in East and Southeast Asia. The exact origin of tofu is not clear, but it is believed to have been first produced in China around 2,000 years ago.
One legend says that tofu was accidentally discovered by a Chinese cook who added a natural coagulant, possibly nigari (a mineral-rich liquid extracted from seawater), to soy milk, creating curds that could be pressed into a solid block. Another legend attributes the discovery of tofu to the famous Chinese philosopher and alchemist, Li Shizhen, who lived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Li Shizhen is said to have invented a method for producing tofu while he was searching for a way to make a food that could cure diseases. Over time, tofu spread throughout East and Southeast Asia.
